DMS Handbook - Telephone/Personal Electronic Device Use

The program recognizes that personal electronic devices, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops, can be valuable tools for learning and engagement. However, to maintain an environment conducive to education and professional development, students must adhere to the following guidelines regarding device use:

  1. Academic Use Only: Electronic devices may be used for approved learning activities, research, and coursework. Students should ensure their device usage aligns with instructional objectives and does not disrupt the learning process. Cell phones are not permitted on the desktop or visible in student’s hands at any time during class without
    instructor approval.
  2. Minimizing Distractions: To foster a focused learning environment, electronic devices should not interfere with classroom discussions, lectures, or hands-on learning. Social media, gaming, and other non-educational activities should be avoided during instructional time.
  3. Distribution of Course Material: Students are strictly prohibited from using electronic devices to record, copy, share, or distribute course materials—including lectures, assignments, exams, and instructor-provided content—without explicit permission from faculty or administration.
  4. Respecting Privacy and Integrity: Device usage must respect the privacy of peers, program faculty, and program affiliates. Unauthorized recording, photographing, or sharing of classroom or clinical interactions, without proper authorization is prohibited.
  5. Cell Phone Use During Clinical Education: To uphold professionalism and patient privacy (HIPAA), cell phone use is strictly prohibited during clinical education, except during designated student breaks in non-patient care areas. Students must refrain from using cell phones while in clinical settings unless authorized by program faculty or the clinical education site for educational purposes. Electronic device usage during clinical education must comply with HIPAA policies.
  6. Compliance and Enforcement: Instructors reserve the right to monitor electronic device usage and take appropriate action if violations occur. Infractions may result in disciplinary measures, including restricted device usage during class or disciplinary action including program dismissal.

By adhering to this policy, students help maintain a focused and respectful learning environment that values education while making thoughtful use of technology.
