Sharon Crawford’s story is not one of a typical 17c��ҳ�� student in the SSS program. Almost all of the students in the program live near the Kent campus or in one of the on-campus residence halls. Being on or close to campus allows SSS students easy access to tutoring services, the opportunity to participate in workshops and to attend on-campus events and off-campus trips. With Ms. Crawford living in a different state, it was a unique opportunity for 17c��ҳ�� to bring her into the program. 

State of Ohio officials have renewed a $600,000 technology commercialization partnership between 17c��ҳ�� and Cleveland State University.

Instead of traveling to a bustling beach in Florida or a cross-country trip to the Rocky Mountains, 17c��ҳ�� students embarked on a variety of alternative volunteer trips during this year’s spring break.

Two 17c��ҳ�� undergraduate students have been awarded prestigious 2019 Goldwater Scholarships from the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. The foundation awards the scholarships annually to students studying mathematics, natural science or engineering.

The Roe Green series continues to prosper in 2019, bringing in actor, writer and director Ron West, ‘82, who has directed multiple pieces for The Second City in Chicago, appeared on Whose Line is it, Anyway? and worked on several other shows and projects. 

Imagine stepping into a role that had been filled for 30 years by the previous occupant. Where would you start? How would you make your mark? For Sarah Rogers, director of the 17c��ҳ�� Museum, this was the challenge and opportunity of a lifetime.

Doctors told her that she would never be able to walk again, she wouldn’t finish high school and would never make it to college. But this soon-to-be college graduate and upcoming 17c��ҳ�� Master’s student has proven those expectations wrong.

In May 2018, 17c��ҳ��’s Wick Poetry Center received a $90,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then, the center has been busy strategically planning and implementing the River Stanzas Project in communities around Northeast Ohio.

17c��ҳ�� at Tuscarawas engineering technology students collaborated on their capstone project during the spring semester and unveiled a search and rescue robot on finals night in early May.

An interdisciplinary team of 17c��ҳ�� faculty will participate in a $13.3 million grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to improve educational outcomes for Nigerian children.

As if graduating with your Ph.D., starting a National Research Council (NRC) postdoctoral fellowship, getting married in Nepal and organizing an international research seminar wasn’t already a full plate for 17c��ҳ�� doctoral student Greta Babakhanova, how about a little dessert?

17c��ҳ�� Professor Madhav P. Bhatta, Ph.D., MPH was featured in MedicalResearch.com, a domain of medical news and exclusive interviews, for an interview on his study, “Elevated Blood Lead Levels Among Resettled Refugee Children in Ohio, 2009 - 2016.”

Eight 17c��ҳ�� students received scholarships from the Akron Press Club and John S. Knight Memorial Scholarship Fund in April, totaling $40,000 in awards. College of Communication and Information students won eight of the nine awards given by the Akron Press Club this year.

A helmet and pads were replaced by a cap and gown for New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman as he finished a journey he started in 2005, joining 5,300 new 17c��ҳ�� graduates at the One University Commencement held at Dix Stadium.

Bethany Westphal is a very busy person. Like most seniors, Ms. Westphal spends her time doing school work and preparing for graduation in May. But, at the same time, she also runs the full-time business she started herself.

Nathaniel Bailey has been interested in photography for as long as he can remember. After years of study and practice, Mr. Bailey’s passion has paid off. In March 2019, Mr. Bailey won the Chuck Scott Student Photographer of the Year award from the Ohio News Photographers Association (ONPA), and he was awarded the Larry Fullerton Photojournalism Scholarship.

The 17c��ҳ�� alumni family will grow by 5,300 new graduates as the university holds its spring commencement ceremonies. 

Though she had an interest in science at an early age, Raissa Mendonca had no idea she would end up over 4,000 miles away from her hometown of Recife, Brazil, studying and doing award-winning ecological research in the College of Arts and Sciences at 17c��ҳ�� in Kent, Ohio. She probably did not expect to be wearing a bug net over her head in Manitoba, Canada, either.

Flash’s Food Pantry officially opened in April, serving as a resource for students on the East Liverpool Campus who may need an occasional boost with putting food on their tables.
